Job Introduction:

In 2012 G4S and Lincolnshire Police formed a Strategic Partnership and we are now currently looking for individuals who are interested in joining us as a Server Specialist.

This is a full time position for 40 hours per week. The post is based at Lincolnshire Police Headquarters, Nettleham. The benefits of working from this location include; free car parking and 24 hours use of a free gym.

The Server Specialist will be responsible for the design, implementation, configuration and on-going management and maintenance of all server and storage technologies.

Niche RMS (Records Management System) is a single, unified, operational policing system that manages information in relation to the core policing entities. The successful post holder for the job advertised will be responsible for the support and development of this application for 6 police forces, on a shared platform.

Role Responsibility:

  • Configure, maintain, and monitor systems to ensure availability to all users and perform necessary preventative and remedial maintenance to support systems availability.
  • Perform all aspects of administrating, operating, managing, and maintaining server and storage technologies.
  • Plan, design, produce, and maintain documentation to support the development of an effective infrastructure.
  • Analyse, diagnose and resolve technical problems. Resolution may be by advising users of the functionality and constraints, or by the correction of faults or by the definition of required enhancements to the network.
  • Identify the causes of system problems, using diagnostic testing software and equipment where available, and take or recommend remedial action.
  • Ensure the security of systems via effective patch management
  • Monitor traffic performance and quality of service provided by the systems and their constituent hardware, software, transmission services and support functions.
  • Manage, configure and monitor Storage Arrays.
  • Manage performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of the infrastructure.
  • Manage, configure and monitor email and related (e.g. BES) systems to ensure availability to contractual requirements.
  • Provide assistance and technical knowledge to aid the implementation of projects.
  • Interfacing with vendor support service groups to ensure proper escalation during outages or periods of degraded system performance.
  • Take ownership of the technical elements of relevant contracts within the domain.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Good working knowledge of virtualisation technology.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Linux and Unix Server Operating Systems.
  • Extensive Active Directory knowledge.
  • Extensive experience of deploying servers within a client/server environment.
  • Good working knowledge of SAN configuration and monitoring.
  • Good analytical skills for problem solving.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills in order to operate at all levels throughout the organisation.
  • Hold a full driving licence as travel to other locations will be required.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Degree from a technology discipline
  • MCITP: Systems Administrator 2008
  • Experience of working with Airwave
